Bangin’ and Clangin’

By Michael L. Alumbaugh, ©1980

Bangin’ on the trash cans and

Clangin’ on the pipes

Won’t satisfy your soul

Or cleanin’ up the dishes

Or makin’ all kinds of wishes

Still won’t satisfy your soul

“Cause ruffles have ridges

And rivers have bridges

And clouds have a silver line

A rainbows end finds gold

Or so we’re told

‘But don’t the blind still lead the blind

Bangin’ on piano keys or

Singin’ in the choir

Won’t satisfy your soul

Or listenin’ to the teacher

Or payin’ off the preacher

Still won’t satisfy your soul

‘Cause diggers dig ditches

And cowboys wear britches

And cows jump over the moon

Well, these are things we’ve learned

But if our hearts don’t turn

We’ll be left

“Cause He’s coming back soon

Now buyin’ a new Cadillac

Or a million dollar home

Won’t satisfy your soul

Or being a rock star groupie

Or watchin’ Oscared movies

Still won’t satisfy your soul

“Cause Humpty fell down

And Jack broke his crown

And a little boy turned blue

But a prayer in belief

That only Christ can give relief

That’s the only way you’ll get through, ‘cause

Bangin’ on the trash cans and

Clangin’ on the pipes

Won’t satisfy your soul

Or cleanin’ up the dishes

Or makin’ all kinds of wishes

Still won’t satisfy your soul

“Cause ruffles have ridges

And rivers have bridges

And clouds have a silver line

A rainbows end finds gold

Or so we’re told

‘But don’t the blind still lead the blind

And diggers dig ditches

And cowboys wear britches

And cows jump over the moon

Well, these are things we’ve learned

But if our hearts don’t turn

We’ll be left . . . [Pause]

Bangin’ on piano keys or

Singin’ in the choir

Won’t satisfy your soul

Or listenin’ to the teacher

Or payin’ off the preacher

Still won’t satisfy your soul . . . [Fade]
